Quick Answer
- Best overall: Claude Code. Opus 5.5 by default, top of the SWE-Bench Pro V2 leaderboard, included in Claude Pro at $20/month.
- Best alternative: OpenAI Codex. GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, an open-source CLI, and a free tier in the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Best AI editor: Cursor. The most complete GUI experience, now with its own Grok 4.7 and Composer 2.5 models.
- Best value: GitHub Copilot Pro at $10/month, or OpenCode and Cline if you would rather pay only for model usage.
How We Built This Ranking
We ranked tools on four things: the strength of the models they give you, what the agent can do on its own (multi-file changes, running tests, opening pull requests), price, and how actively the product is developed. Benchmarks are quoted only where the source is public, and we say who ran them.
Every price, plan and status was checked on the vendor's own pricing pages, docs and announcements on October 11, 2026, and each fact links to its source. We did not run our own benchmark.
What Changed Since March 2026
| Change | Details |
|---|---|
| SWE-bench Verified retired as a headline number | OpenAI stopped reporting it (Feb 23, 2026); no Sept–Oct flagship launch reports it |
| New frontier models | Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 (Sep 22), OpenAI GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, Google Gemini 4 Argon (limited access) |
| Cursor | Acquired by SpaceX (closed Aug 14, 2026); own models Grok 4.7 and Composer 2.5 |
| Windsurf | Renamed Devin Desktop (Jun 2, 2026) |
| Gemini Code Assist | Free individual tier shut down Jun 18, 2026; replaced by Antigravity |
| Amazon Q Developer | New sign-ups blocked May 15, 2026; replaced by Kiro |
| Continue.dev | Joined Cursor; repo read-only |
| Tabnine | Acquired by Tricentis (Jul 30, 2026); no free tier |
| Qodo | Dropped code generation (Apr 23, 2026); now code review only |
| GitHub Copilot | Moved to usage-based AI Credits (Jun 1, 2026); new Max plan at $100 |
Benchmarks in October 2026: Read These Carefully
SWE-bench Verified is no longer useful for comparing current tools. Its official leaderboard has had no new entries since February 26, 2026, and its top score (79.2%) belongs to Claude 4.5 Opus-based agents (swebench.com).
The most cited replacement is Scale's SWE-Bench Pro V2 (released September 22, 2026; 642 tasks across 11 repositories). Top of the full leaderboard on October 11 (Scale Labs):
| Rank | Model (agent) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Claude Opus 5 (Claude Code) | 98.0 |
| 2 | Claude Fable 5.1 (Claude Code) | 92.2 |
| 3 | GPT-6 Astra (Codex) | 90.2 |
| 4 | Kimi-K3 (mini-swe-agent) | 88.2 |
| 4 | Claude Sonnet 5 (Claude Code) | 88.2 |
| 6 | GPT-5.6 Terra (Codex) | 86.3 |
Two caveats. Opus 5.5 is not on this board yet. And scores from different sources are not comparable: Anthropic reports 89.9% on SWE-bench Pro for Opus 5.5 in its own system card, using a different version and harness.
Vendor-reported scores on benchmarks that more than one vendor publishes:
| Model | Terminal-Bench 4.0 | FrontierCode 1.1 (Main) | DeepSWE v1.1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic) | 66.4% | 54.4% | — |
| GPT-6 Astra (OpenAI) | 57.9% | 53.3% | 74.1% |
| Gemini 4 Argon (Google) | — | — | 77.9% |
| Cognition SWE-2 (Cognition) | — | 50.0% | — |
Each vendor runs its own evaluations, so treat small gaps as noise. The model matters, but so does the agent around it, which is why the ranking below is about tools, not models.
The AI Coding Tool Ranking for October 2026
Tier 1: The Leaders
#1. Claude Code (Anthropic)
Price: included in Claude Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed annually), Max ($100 or $200/month) and Team plans; not on the free plan (pricing) | Default model: Claude Opus 5.5
Claude Code is a terminal-first coding agent that also runs in IDEs, on the desktop and on the web. Its default model is Opus 5.5 on every paid plan, with a fable option for the hardest, longest tasks (model config). Opus 5.5 also has a fast mode in Claude Code at up to 2.5x speed (announcement).
Why #1: Claude Code runs hold the top two spots on SWE-Bench Pro V2, and Opus 5.5 leads the vendor-reported Terminal-Bench 4.0 and FrontierCode numbers above. Anthropic's last Claude Code-specific figures (February 2026) put its run-rate revenue above $2.5 billion (Anthropic).
Limitations: no free tier, and heavy users will hit usage limits on Pro and need Max.
Best for: complex, multi-file work and long autonomous tasks.
#2. OpenAI Codex
Price: included in every ChatGPT plan. Free and Go ($8) get GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app; Plus ($20) adds the CLI, IDE extension, web and iOS; Pro is $100, $200 or $500/month (pricing) | Models: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna
Codex is now bundled with ChatGPT Work and shares one usage pool with it. OpenAI recommends GPT-6.1 Sol for complex coding ("near-Astra performance… at a lower cost") and calls GPT-6 Astra its most capable model (models). The Codex CLI is open source under Apache-2.0; the IDE extension and Codex cloud are not (open source). GPT-5.5 retires from Codex on October 14, 2026.
Why #2: GPT-6 Astra is third on SWE-Bench Pro V2, Codex (unlike Claude Code) has a free tier, and cloud features like GitHub @codex delegation and PR review come with Plus.
Limitations: the free tier is limited to Luna in the desktop app; Ultrafast mode is only on the $500 Pro plan.
Best for: ChatGPT subscribers, and teams that want code review and delegation from GitHub and Slack.
#3. Cursor
Price: Hobby free; Pro $20, Pro+ $60, Ultra $200/month; Teams $40/user (pricing) | Models: Grok 4.7, Composer 2.5 and frontier models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google
Cursor is still the most complete AI editor. Since joining SpaceX (closed August 14, 2026), its paid plans have two usage pools: a generous one for Cursor's own models (Grok 4.7, trained with SpaceXAI, and Composer 2.5) and one for third-party models such as Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-5.6, charged at API price (models).
Why #3: the best GUI workflow (inline diffs, Tab completions, background agents) and a broad model menu. Bloomberg reported $2 billion in annual recurring revenue in March 2026, a report Cursor links on its own press page.
Limitations: the best third-party models draw from a pay-at-API-price pool; Hobby limits are not published.
Best for: developers who want to stay in an editor rather than a terminal.
Tier 2: Strong Contenders
#4. GitHub Copilot
Price: Free; Pro $10, Pro+ $39, Max $100/month; Business $19 and Enterprise $39 per seat (plans)
Copilot moved to usage-based GitHub AI Credits on June 1, 2026. Pro includes 1,500 credits, Pro+ 7,000 and Max 20,000; code completions stay unlimited on paid plans. The coding agent is now called Copilot cloud agent and is not on the free plan. GitHub's model list covers OpenAI GPT-6, Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok and more (supported models).
Best for: teams already on GitHub, and anyone who wants a capable tool at $10/month.
#5. Devin (Cognition) — Including Devin Desktop, Formerly Windsurf
Price: Free; Pro $20, Max $200/month; Teams from $80/month (pricing)
Cognition now sells everything under the Devin name: Devin Cloud (an autonomous engineer that "won't stop until the PR is ready to merge"), Devin Desktop (the former Windsurf IDE), a CLI and Devin Review. Its own SWE-2 model scores 50.0% on FrontierCode, close to Fable 5.1's 50.9% by Cognition's measurement (SWE-2). Cognition claims over 1 million users and 4,000 enterprise customers for Devin Desktop (devin.ai/desktop).
Best for: delegating whole tasks to a cloud agent while keeping a familiar IDE for hands-on work.
#6. Google Antigravity
Price: free individual plan with weekly limits; higher limits through Google AI Pro/Ultra; business from $30/seat (pricing)
Antigravity is Google's agentic IDE and CLI, and the replacement for Gemini Code Assist for individuals and Gemini CLI's free login. It offers Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.1 Pro alongside Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 (models). Gemini 4 Argon, which Google says sets a new state of the art on DeepSWE, is in limited early access.
Best for: a strong free agent, and Google Cloud users.
#7. Kiro (AWS)
Price: Free (50 credits); Pro $20, Pro+ $40, Pro Max $100, Power $200/month (pricing)
Kiro is AWS's spec-driven IDE and CLI and the successor to Amazon Q Developer. By default an "Auto" router picks the model per task; paid plans can choose Claude Opus 5.5 (at 2x credits), Sonnet 5.5, GPT-5.6 and open-weight models (models).
Best for: AWS teams, and developers who like writing a spec before the agent writes code.
Tier 3: Open-Source and Bring-Your-Own-Model Agents
#8. OpenCode
Price: free and MIT-licensed; optional Zen pay-as-you-go or Go at $10/month (opencode.ai) | GitHub stars: 212K+
The most popular open-source coding agent. It works with 75+ providers and local models, can sign in with an existing Copilot or ChatGPT subscription, and offers rotating free models through Zen. It is the best choice if you want full control over which model you use and what you pay.
#9. Cline
Price: free for individuals; ClinePass $9.99/month for open-weight models (pricing) | VS Code installs: 5.5M+
The leading open-source agent inside VS Code, with Plan/Act modes, checkpoints and MCP. It now also ships a CLI, a desktop app and Cline Cloud agents. Best for VS Code users who want agentic editing without a subscription.
#10. Amp
Price: free "Hobby" tier when you bring your own keys or subscriptions; $20/month paid plan (pricing)
Amp spun out of Sourcegraph as an independent company. Its modes run on Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, and "orbs" give each thread its own cloud machine so the agent keeps working after you close your laptop (news). Since October 10, 2026 you can use a Claude Pro or Max subscription in Amp.
Tier 4: Specialized or Fading
#11. JetBrains AI and Junie
Price: AI Free (3 credits per 30 days) and free Junie Lite; AI Pro $10, AI Ultimate $30/month for individuals (licensing)
The natural pick inside IntelliJ, PyCharm and other JetBrains IDEs. Junie is JetBrains' coding agent, now also available as a CLI and in CI, with Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 3.1 Pro and Grok 4.7 among its models (Junie).
#12. Qodo
Price: 14-day trial; Pro Team from $30/month for a pooled 2,500 credits (pricing)
Qodo no longer generates code. Since April 2026 it focuses on AI code review and governance in Git, the IDE and the CLI. Add it to another tool if you want automated review on every pull request.
#13. Aider
Price: free and open source; bring your own model (aider.chat)
Still a capable terminal pair programmer, but its last release was February 12, 2026 and its leaderboard has not been updated since November 2025 (PyPI). Keep using it if it works for you; new users should start with OpenCode or Cline.

Most professional developers combine two tools: an agent for large changes and an editor or extension for day-to-day edits.
Building Beyond Code: AI App Builders
Every tool above assumes you can read and fix code. If you just need a working web app, AI app builders take a different approach: you describe the app in plain language and the AI builds the frontend, backend and database for you. The main options (prices checked October 11, 2026):
| Builder | Entry paid plan | Free plan |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable | Pro from $25/mo (100 credits) | 5 credits a day, up to 30 a month |
| Bolt.new | Pro $25/mo; Lite $9/mo (open-model agent only) | 1M tokens a month |
| Replit | Core $20/mo | Starter plan |
| v0 | Plus $30/user/mo | 7 messages a day |
| ZBuild (our product) | Lite $9/mo (900 credits); Pro $25/mo | Plan your app with the AI for free |
In ZBuild, the AI first works out a plan with you (pages, data, behavior). Planning is free, so you can see what you would get before subscribing. It then builds a full-stack web app in a cloud workspace with a live preview, and you keep changing it by chat. Use a coding tool when you want to own and write the code; use an app builder when you just need the app.
